We are a church that is energized by lively engagement in our faith and life. ELCA advocacy works for change in public policy based on the experience of Lutheran ministries, programs and projects around the world and in communities across the United States. We work through political channels on behalf of the following biblical values: peacemaking, hospitality to strangers, care for creation, and concern for people living in poverty and struggling with hunger and disease.

Working With ELCA State Public Policy Offices
The Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin is one of the state public policy offices of the ELCA. LOPPW and other State Public Policy Offices (SPPOs) represent the church in advocating at the state level and lifting the voices of those who have historically had little economic or political power. SPPOs work in partnership with local congregations, synods and social ministry organizations.

Supporting the Lutheran Office for World Community
The Lutheran Office for World Community(LOWC) represents the ELCA and Lutheran World Federation (LWF) at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York. The LWF is a non-governmental organization officially recognized by the UN’s Economic and Social Council. LOPPW is informed by LOWC’s involvement in UN proceedings and looks to support LOWC efforts as able.
Advocacy With Interfaith and Secular Partners
LOPPW firmly believes in the power of collective action among people from diverse demographic, geographic, and even religious backgrounds. In line with this vision, LOPPW works with interfaith and secular groups in common mission. By joining issue-based coalitions and working within diverse networks, LOPPW looks to grow our advocacy efforts and expand our reach. Among other efforts, the Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin has joined with interfaith and secular groups to host rallies on environmental protection, advocate for “Raise the Age” youth justice reform, fight for protections for human trafficking victims, and raise public support in favor of public health measures during the Covid-19 pandemic.
