Care for Creation
“We see the despoiling of the environment as nothing less than the degradation of God’s gracious gift of creation.” – ELCA Social Statement Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope, and Justice
For Lutherans, caring for the environment is a profoundly spiritual calling. We witness God’s goodness in creation and believe we are entrusted with the responsibility to act as faithful stewards of the earth.
Today, living creatures—and the air, soil, and water that sustain them—face unprecedented threats. Many of these challenges are global, and most stem directly from human activity. Decisions made in one place often ripple across the planet, reminding us of our deep interconnection.
We are concerned about the depletion of non-renewable resources, the rapid destruction of habitats, erosion of topsoil, pollution of air and water, and the growing volume of waste. These issues are not abstract—they affect communities, health, and future generations.
Our faith gives us hope that inspires action. We are called to acknowledge our interdependence with all creation and to work both locally and globally for its care. This means advocating for policies that protect the environment, support sustainable practices, and restore and preserve God’s creation.
