What We Do
The Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin (LOPPW) is a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Grounded in Scripture and guided by ELCA Social Statements and Messages, we respond to God’s call to love our neighbor through public witness and action. We are committed to advocating for just, compassionate, and sound public policies, and our advocacy is rooted in our Lutheran faith.
“In faithfulness to [God’s] calling, this church is committed to defend human dignity, to stand with poor and powerless people, to advocate justice, to work for peace, and to care for the earth…” – ELCA Social Statement: Church in Society
Positions & Issues
LOPPW engages in advocacy for and supports policies that promote peace, justice, and care for creation. Our work focuses on hunger, poverty, and environmental work. While recognizing the diversity of opinions among Lutherans, our positions are grounded in Lutheran theology, ELCA social statements, research, and careful discernment. How We Advocate
LOPPW works with bishops, pastors, congregations, church members, and partners across Wisconsin to promote policies that reflect our shared values.
We keep our community informed about state and federal legislation, and we deliver workshops, trainings, and resources to help individuals and congregations engage in nonpartisan advocacy rooted in Lutheran theology. LOPPW also interprets and communicates public policy positions to state legislators and agencies through testimony and bill registration.
We collaborate with ELCA’s national advocacy office, other ELCA state public policy offices across the nation, the Lutheran Office for World Community at the United Nations, and interfaith and secular organizations in Wisconsin.
