LOPPW Testifies on Water Pollution Act
December 18, 2025
Today the Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin testified in support of the Water Pollution Notification Act at a legislative hearing.
Speaking to members of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources, Veteran and Miliary Affairs, LOPPW Director Kacy Kostiuk expressed support for Senate Bill 628, which would require the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to notify local health officials when they have identified groundwater contamination, giving local health officials the tools they need to notify impacted people.
“Lutherans have a commitment to love and seek the wellbeing of our neighbors…” Kacy said. “We have a responsibility to help each other attain good health through our ways of living together. In this way, health is a shared endeavor, and this bill is a positive step toward that shared cooperative effort.”
Approximately one-third of Wisconsinites get their drinking water from private wells, but water pollution threatens the safety of that water. Drinking water contamination can cause lifelong harm – from developmental delays in children to cancer and chronic illness.
Everyone deserves access to clean drinking water, and this bill would help make it possible for more Wisconsinites to ensure they are drinking clean water.
LOPPW joined six other people and organizations at the hearing to testify in support of the bill, including Wisconsin Conservation Voters and the River Alliance of Wisconsin.
A future public hearing may be scheduled soon in the Assembly.
